PRIVACY POLICY
Last updated: 24 April 2026
This Privacy Policy describes how James Appleby trading as Appleby Technical ("we", "us", or "our") handles information in connection with the Cue Light application for iPad and Mac ("the App").
Questions or concerns? Contact us at james@applebytechnical.com.
SUMMARY
Cue Light is designed with privacy as a default. In short:
- We do not collect your personal data. The App stores only a device name and role preference locally on your device.
- All network communication is local. OSC messages travel only within your local Wi-Fi network and are never routed to the internet.
- We do not use analytics, advertising SDKs, or any third-party services.
- The App is free. There are no in-app purchases and no payment information is collected.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
1. WHAT THE APP STORES AND WHERE
Cue Light stores only the minimum information required to operate. All data is stored locally on your device in UserDefaults — a standard iOS/macOS storage mechanism. Nothing is transmitted to Appleby Technical.
Device Name and Role
You choose a name for your device (e.g. "LX", "Sound") and whether it operates as a DSM or a Receiver. These preferences are stored locally on your device and are never uploaded to any server.
Your chosen device name is broadcast on your local Wi-Fi network as part of OSC messages so that other Cue Light devices on the same network can identify your device. It is not transmitted outside your local network.
Device Panel Layout (DSM only)
If you use the DSM role, the names and labels of receiver devices you have added to your panel are stored locally on your device. This data is not synced to iCloud or transmitted to any server.
| Data type | Where stored | Accessible to Appleby Technical? |
|---|---|---|
| Device name and role | Your device only (UserDefaults) | No |
| DSM receiver panel layout | Your device only (UserDefaults) | No |
| OSC cue messages | Local network only (not stored) | No |
2. LOCAL NETWORK COMMUNICATION
Cue Light uses your local Wi-Fi network to send and receive OSC (Open Sound Control) messages between devices. These messages contain:
- The device name you have chosen
- Cue state information: standby, acknowledged, go, or reset
OSC messages are broadcast to all devices on your local network and are not stored by the App after processing. No data is routed to the internet or to any Appleby Technical server at any point.
The App will request permission to access your local network on first launch, as required by iOS. You may deny this permission, but the App will not be able to communicate with other devices if you do.
3. NO ANALYTICS OR TRACKING
Cue Light contains no analytics SDKs, advertising SDKs, or third-party tracking code of any kind. We do not collect:
- Usage statistics or crash analytics sent to us
- Device identifiers or advertising identifiers (IDFA)
- Location data
- Behavioural or interaction data
Apple may collect anonymous, aggregated crash reports and app usage data through the App Store, subject to your device's privacy settings and Apple's own privacy policy. This data is provided to us only in aggregated form (e.g. crash counts) and cannot be linked to individual users.
4. THIRD PARTIES
Cue Light uses no third-party SDKs or services. The App is built entirely on Apple's own frameworks (SwiftUI, Network framework) and communicates only over your local network. No data is shared with any third-party company, advertising network, or analytics provider.
5. DATA SECURITY
Because Cue Light stores only local preferences on your device and communicates only over your local network, there is no Appleby Technical server or database that could be breached to expose your information.
Local device data is protected by your device's passcode and iOS / macOS security model.
OSC messages are unencrypted UDP broadcasts — a standard protocol for this type of theatrical control system. We recommend using a secured (password-protected) Wi-Fi network during shows.
6. YOUR RIGHTS (UK GDPR)
Because we do not collect or process personal data about you directly, the majority of data subject rights under UK GDPR are not applicable — we hold no personal data about you.
If you believe we hold any personal information about you — for example, if you have contacted us by email — you have the right to:
- Access — request a copy of any personal information we hold.
- Rectification — request correction of inaccurate data.
- Erasure — request deletion of your personal data.
- Object — object to processing of your personal data.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at james@applebytechnical.com.
If you are located in the UK and believe your data protection rights have been breached, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
To delete your Cue Light data: delete the App from your device. All locally stored preferences are removed automatically.
7. CHILDREN
Cue Light does not collect any personal information from users of any age. The App is designed for professional and educational use in theatrical production.
8. UPDATES TO THIS POLICY
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will always reflect the most recent revision. Material changes will be communicated via an app update notice or by updating this page.
